Art in the Hall - June 2016 - Larry Marno

Larry Marno

This month, we welcome Larry Marno, a past member of UCM.

Fifteen years ago I expressed a desire to paint and was told by my good friend that I could learn to do that! It has been a great learning experience. I would never have realized what a consuming and meditative experience drawing/painting could be.

Through drawing and painting I have learned a great deal about myself while sharpening my awareness of the world around me. I began in watercolour.

I must thank my very masterful and generous mentor, Art Cunanan. In the years since I have begun to explore acrylics and have extended my art into oils. I would also like to thank Brian Smith (drawing) and Lorne Winters (oil) for their guidance."

Peter Marmorek lives in Toronto. He has been a teacher for over forty years, thirty of them in Ontario high schools, the last ten teaching creative writing online on his own. Over that time he has taught photography, World Religions, English, Media, Mathematics, Physics, sociology, and computer programming. He enjoys crossing borders, both literally and intellectually.

While teaching World Religions at IndEC South alternative school, he discovered South Peel Unitarian (Mark DeWolfe's time JE) and for a while helped teach their Sunday program. That eventually led to his current membership in Neighbourhood UU Congregation in East Toronto. He has published The Year of Living Doggedly, (about his first year with Rui, a labradoodle) and been anthologized in Be There, Now, (a collection of travel writing). He is currently working on Teaching from the Four Directions, an exploration of his teaching.

Art in the Hall - February 2016 - Bill Burns

Bill Burns - Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga

Bill Burns

Plein-air is Bills blessing and passion. Painting directly in nature, with its challenging transient qualities, an artist is both forced to see and paint emotively nature's very essence. It is Bills hope that through his art you will see not only the beauty we are blessed with, but also sense the Creative Spirit in nature.

Bill studied art at the Ontario College of Art and graduated with A.O.C.A. in 1997. He has been painting for over 30 years and has had numerous exhibitions in Toronto, other Provinces and New York. He lives in Oshawa.
