11:30 TRANSFORMING A DREARY 1950’S SUBURBAN BUNGALOW & LOT INTO A VIBRANT ECOSPHERE Come find out how we cut our carbon footprint in half and transformed a typical suburban bungalow and lot into a vibrant green space where we grow much of our fresh produce using Permaculture principles, produce more electricity than we consume, capture and reuse on-site rainwater, etc. Presentation will include before/after slides, brief explanation, a short 5-minute WebTV documentary, and lots of time for Q&A about how some of this might apply in your own contexts. 12:30 CONTAINER GARDENING Martha Kantorczyk, winner of the 2008 Mississauga in Bloom competition for container gardening, will discuss the basics of choosing the right container, planting and maintenance, design and plant combinations. This workshop will include a demonstration of designing and planting a Spring-themed container. Presenter: Martha Kantorczyk
1:30 HERBS IN YOUR GARDEN A discussion of herbs that you can grow yourself, why you would want to grow these particular ones and how you would use them once grown, some fresh, some dried. Also included will be herbs that seed themselves as well as those you have to help along each year. I will show how I start seeds and bring some herbal teas from my garden to sample. 2:30 GROWING FOOD - ALL YEAR LONG (AND EAT LOCAL, TOO) Kyla Dixon-Muir has been in the garden every single week – including right through the winter – for a number of years. She grows foods in a wide range of low-cost and no-cost ColdFrames, many of which do not require construction skills. Learn how to apply Season Extension Techniques to get as much as a two-month head start on growing foods this spring – and to build Raised Beds, and to keep foods growing for longer into the fall.
