| Love to sing? Join this group of mixed voices who sing regularly at Sunday worship. The music they perform reflects the diversity of music itself. New singers are always welcome. The SOUTH PEEL CHOIR meets on Sundays at 9:30 am to practice in the Great Hall. Our excellent Choir Director is Miles Hearn. Songs may be from contemporary or religious sources. There is a UU songbook along with additional pieces selected by Miles. Miles Hearn grew up in the Toronto area and has a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto. He played French Horn with a number of professional symphonies including the Toronto Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, the Hamilton Philharmonic, Canadian Opera, National Ballet of Canada and the O'Keefe Centre. He is currently a member of the Toronto Mendellson Choir. Miles leads the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga Choir, which meets most Sundays before service at 9:30am and always welcomes new members. | | CHOIR NOTES On September 12, 1912, the first performance of the 8th symphony by renowned composer Gustav Mahler was given. On that occasion the number of musicians involved totalled 1,030: 171 instrumentalists and 859 singers. As a result, the symphony has the nickname of “Symphony of a Thousand.” Last month, I had the pleasure of spending a week in Vancouver as a participant in the Cultural Olympics. 100 members of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir joined 150 members of the Vancouver Bach Choir, a 50 voice children’s choir, 8 soloists and the Vancouver Symphony for several performances of this powerful work. It was a very nostalgic week for me as I was a member of the french horn section of the Vancouver Symphony way back in 1974. - Miles (March 2010) | |
