Ministry

Fiona in office

The Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga is served by Reverend Fiona Heath.  Ministry in the Unitarian Universalist tradition has four elements: to be a messenger of wonder, reminding us that we all are part of the greater whole; to be a facilitator of community, helping us to develop healthy systems; to be a witness to the ups and downs of our lives; and to be a catalyst for change, in ourselves and in society.

Rev. Fiona believes Unitarian Universalism has a message worth sharing, one that challenges us to live by our principles, nourished by our connections to the earth.

Fiona can be contacted at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .    Check out her blog at: www.emptychalice.com.  Click here to find out more about Rev. Fiona Heath.

While Rev. Fiona is the spiritual leader of this chalice community, ministry is more than the work of the minister. As Unitarian Universalists we support shared ministry, members also offer ministry to each other and the wider world through caring for one another, working towards a better society, and participating in services.

Theme Based Ministry

Rev. Fiona Heath Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga Each month is devoted to a theme, which will be explored through services and in small groups.

We will post resources on-line at uucmthemes.wordpress.com, paper copies will also be available.  There will be questions to ponder and spiritual exercises to try.

Themes for 2016-2017

October - Blessings
Count your blessings! As Unitarians, blessings are those people, things, and experiences which enhance life, offering joyful meaning. What does it mean to be a people of blessings?

November - Endings
This month we deal with the difficult theme of endings. The painful reality of living is that all things – the good and the bad - come to an end. Sometimes they are transforming into something new and better, sometimes it is a final ending. How do we live gracefully with all the endings?

December - Wonder
The first of our six sources is the “Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life.” This month we celebrate the wonder of life.

January - Music
“My Life flows on in Endless Song”. We celebrate the deep human need for music, which expresses the inexpressible experiences of living from the heights of love to the depths of pain.

February - Love & Justice
Last year the national denominational body affirmed a new vision – our interdependence calls us to love and justice. Cornel West said that justice is what love looks like in public. How  can we – in public and private - live into this UU vision of love and justice?

March - Simplicity
What does it mean to be a people of simplicity? Living more simply in modern society means making conscious choices about how we use our time, energy and resources in ways that express our values. Simplicity helps us to see what is essential to live well.

April - Reconciliation
The art of reconciliation is to be able to share difficult truths with kindness in order for mutual respect to be restored. What does it mean to be people of reconciliation? With one another? With the indigenous people of Canada?

May - Compassion
Compassionate feeling and action help us understand one another. Karen Armstrong calls compassion “the heart of religion”. We will explore the complexity, challenges and joys of compassion.

You are warmly encouraged to join one of our small groups. Each month a facilitated group of 6 to 8 people gather to share and reflect on their experience of the theme. We have a special group for parents, a weekday afternoon group, as well as a 401 northwest group. Each group meets monthly until June, spending two hours in conversation and reflection.

Contact our Director of Lifespan Learning, Pamela Smith Loeters for more details.

Voices UUnited - Choir

Our choir, Voices UUnited starts up on Sunday, September 13th at 9:30 a.m. with Abigail Freeman, our Music Director. If you’d like to come out and join us we’d be happy to have you. We will rehearse every Sunday morning from 9:30 to 10:00 plus once a month after service and perform an anthem approximately every second Sunday. There is no audition and you do not need to read music – just love to sing. We welcome all.
